As the grey hairs creep onto my scalp and the laugh lines on my face deepen, I think of my mother-in-law and Mick Jagger. They are almost the exact same age at 65, yet their perspectives and attack on life couldn’t be more different.
While I love my mother-in-law dearly, she is convinced that life at her age is old and limited. It’s time to retire, reminisce, and “act her age”. Would she still feel this way if one of her reference points was Mick Jagger?
Mick, on the other hand, says, “I’m not really much of a looking-back person. My role is just to move forward.” Instead of retiring, Mick chooses to reinvent himself. He continues to push the edges of music, writing, and film making. His on stage energy is captivating and rivals other performers one-third his age.
My mother-in-law constantly marvels at the success of our network marketing business and often remarks how lucky we are in life. She believes people are handed the circumstances that shape their destiny. Not if your reference point is Mick Jagger.
When Mick is asked about the incredible success and longevity of The Rolling Stones, he says, “We had great confidence in what we did compared to other people. Then, the rest of it was a lot of hard work.” It’s obvious that Mick believes his success, happiness, and future are under his thumb.
How do you define network marketing success? How about integrity? Or age? The clearest way to communicate your vision of these nebulous terms is by pointing to an individual who embodies that trait. For me, my wife defines success, my brother leads with integrity, and Mick Jagger shows me what 65 should be.
We all choose our reference points, either consciously or subconsciously, and these people help us form our most important attitudes and opinions. When we choose positive reference points, we are given the blueprints for actions which can create a remarkable life. It’s up to us to feel the “Satisfaction” of making it happen.
Ultimately, live your life and build your business in a way that others will choose you as their reference point for excellence.
Keep Leading Forward!
Brad

I completely agree.
My own mother is under similar assumptions on how we are able to do the things we do. She is an intelligent, hard-working person, but she cannot comprehend that success is something you decide to do, and work hard for.
She thinks its the equivalent of a winning lotto ticket. It's insulting, really.
Here's to hard work, determination, and success in network marketing and any other business venture!

This is a nice post. Age in life should never be looked at as a hinderance.
There a countless stories of people who in the twilight of their lives make huge jumps in there lives.
Napoleon Hill, in his great book Think and Grow Rich, says that people often make their greatest steps forward in their later years.
Ray Kroc, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison to name a few.
